Sparked by the discovery that there are over one thousand inspirational women featured in the Dictionary of Irish Biography - a stark contrast to the handful of women on the school curriculum - in 2016 Melanie Lynch founded Herstory to create the change she wanted to see in the world.

Herstory is a multi-disciplinary storytelling platform that illuminates and celebrates female role-models. Through pioneering education and art programmes, we inspire, educate and empower our youth and nation. In turn, we spark sister movements across the world.

Herstory is a trailblazer and thresholder: pioneering cultural activism and challenging the status quo, whilst collaborating with the government and national institutions. Within 7 years, Herstory became a household name in Ireland.

Herstory is every woman’s story

HERSTORY ON RTÉ

In 2020, Melanie was the originator and executive producer of Herstory on RTÉ, the first comprehensive 360° women’s storytelling platform on Ireland’s national broadcaster, featuring a major documentary TV series (3,207,600 views), children’s animation series, podcasts, schools workshops, a special Nationwide episode and more. Herstory on RTÉ was created in partnership with RTÉ, EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum, Underground Films, and the Broadcasting Association of Ireland.

This is a permanent digital educational resource, supporting teachers, students and inspiring generations to come. As a result, Herstory has been made an official resource of the school curriculum. www.rte.ie/herstory

RTÉ Young People’s Programmes commissioned six original Irish animations, each telling the story of one inspiring Irish woman. The women featured in each animation were nominated by schoolchildren from across Ireland as part of RTÉ’s Who’s Your Heroine?
